Old Royal Ordnance Depot (known as The Depot)
An ordnance depot at Weedon Bec was authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1803. This was mainly built between 1804 and 1816. It was built for the Board of Ordnance to provide a secure inland store for gunpowder, firearms and other military stores. These could be transported by the nearby Grand Junction Canal. The original buildings included eight storehouses, four magazines, two lodges, accommodation for the Board's officials and a canal basin. Four storehouses were converted to a barracks and two into a military prison. The outbreak of the First World War saw several new storehouses and workshops added to the depot and the prison was closed. The depot was gradually emptied after World War Two and closed in 1965.
The Depot today has many different businesses including the popular Visitor Centre which gives a lot of history on the whole site, bookshop, antique centres, pottery classes, knitting classes, wool shop including wool dyeing, various cafes, Industry & Supply - an automotive art and merchandise company, doggy day care and others too numerous to mention.
Weedon Village Hall
Changing Rooms at Jubilee Field
The Changing Rooms - Jubilee Field
After many years of hard work and fund raising efforts by Weedon Sports Association (WSA), the village has a Community Sports Facility to be proud of! WSA are the owners of the complex, a charity that was established in 1992 with the sole aim to achieve what you see at the Jubilee Field now. In 1992 all there was provided for Weedon sports users was a leaky portacabin with no water, power or toilets!
The facility is now being well used by Weedon Football Club, but it is intended to be used by other Community and Sports Groups as well.
The welfare unit is fully DDA compliant, with chairs and tables, fitted kitchen, heating, wi-fi and toilets. It would suit groups up to 25 persons. The facility is fully insured and has cctv security. It can be hired by the hour at £7 ( non-Weedon Residents the rate is £10 per hour.)
The entire complex is also available for hire including changing rooms and showers and independent officials changing room. Hire rates are negotiable for full hire.
The WSA need to establish an independent Management Team to ensure that the facility is well maintained and remains a sustainable asset for the Community. Would you like to join this management team? No experience needed ! Please think about it. You can see by the facility that has been provided that the WSA can deliver so why not join our successful team?
